ALL ABOUT KOH ENG HUAT

Past. Present. Future.

Guitarist Koh Eng Huat has performed in numerous concerts and festivals throughout his career as a performing artist and as a session musician. His versatility in multiple genres has gained him regular performance engagements and club residency for the past decade. His dedication to his craft has led him to continue his studies at LASALLE College of the Arts in 2017, and this has changed his approach and technique in his playing. Transitioning from mainstream music to jazz in 2020, he has since taken a keen interest in improvisation and experimental music, exploring a new spectrum of sounds and structure.

He began learning the organ at the age of 9 and joined his secondary school band as a percussionist/drummer a few years later. During this time, he was introduced to the guitar by his classmate, and it has since become his main instrument.

Eng Huat, with his band, emerged as a finalist in a national band competition in the early days of his career and eventually finished as second runners-up. Nevertheless, he gained a 1-year contract with MediaCorp and began performing extensively. He performed in events such as the Singapore Idol concert, MediaCorp’s New Year, and Chinese New Year countdown concerts. After he ended his contract with MediaCorp, he was continually engaged by the station to perform in various events, including TV appearances and New Year countdown shows for the next three years. During this time, he began performing as a resident guitarist in a local club where he experienced a different demand and culture as opposed to being an artist. Over the next 12 years, not only did he continually develop his technical skills in mainstream music, but he has also consistently sought new challenges and knowledge.

In 2017, he decided to further his education in music and enrolled in LASALLE College of Arts. After finishing his diploma in music in 2020, he decided to continue his studies in jazz as his desire for more challenges and knowledge grew.
